The Different Types of Bipolar Disorder

All three main types of bipolar disorder can all be characterized by the episodes of manic depressive syndrome. The person can be irritable in a manic episode due to hyperactivity and due to this, he or she is fully awake even during sleeping hours. In a depressive episode, the person experience sadness, melancholy, loss of hope and tends to be tired and weak, leading to periods of inactivity. Different types of bipolar disorders differences concentrate mainly on the severity or combination of these episodes.

Bipolar I disorder is one of the types of bipolar disorder and it fits the most classic concept of a manic-depressive person. People suffering from Bipolar I disorder have longer duration of manic episodes lasting from one weeks to certain number of months. A key characteristic of this bipolar disorder is the person has feelings of self-importance during this manic phase.

The next classification after bipolar I is of course bipolar II disorder. This person does not suffer from extreme mania, but in this type of bipolar episode, the person experiences a milder hypomanic phase. By this process, they no longer have delusions and they can fit in and be functional as compared to those who suffer from bipolar I disorder. The hypomanic phase in this bipolar disorder makes the person so ecstatic that they even stop their medications so they can experience this episode longer.

The third and final classification of the type of bipolar disorder is called cyclothymic disorder. This condition is relatively milder than the first two types because the mood of those affected by it cycles between just hypomania and mild depression. This condition can be hibernating for quite some time and could be a full blown bipolar disorder when awaken.

In addition to those aforementioned types of bipolar disorder, a symptom called rapid cycling can also be considered as a sub-type. This kind of bipolar disorder make the people experience four episode changes within a one year period. Others can go through several episodes in a day leading to massive depression and suicidal tendencies.
